This camping area was originally founded in 1872 as Camp Grely, which was a military settlement established to provide protection for the men working on the Northern Pacific Railroad. Located in nearby Mandan, Fort Abraham Lincoln dates all the way back to the 18th century. One of the most stunning aspects of the fort is that it looks almost as it did back in 1876 around the time of Custer's last stand.
